The International Awards for Art Criticism ( IAAC ) are now already into their fourth year and have become an eagerly anticipated fixture in the calendar of the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum. The fact that the Awards have achieved such rapid success and widespread recognition is due in large measure to the support and encouragement of many people who have been willing to make common cause with us and lend us their support and encouragement. This has contributed greatly to our confidence and commitment.

For the first time this year, the entries to the competition were limited to pieces of new writing that had not previously been published in print or online. At the same time, the number of Awards was increased from three to four, comprising, as before, one first prize for a critic writing in Chinese or in English and three ( instead of two ) joint Award Winners in second place. The prize money was also substantially increased, with the first prize rising from 6,000 euros to 10,000 euros ( approx. 80,000 CNY ) and the second prizes growing from 2,000 euros to 3,500 euros ( approx. 30,000 CNY ) each. In making these changes we have sought to enhance the international competitiveness of the Awards and further widen their geographical reach, at the same time as doing still more to reward the efforts of reviewers who made a genuine effort to exercise their independent critical faculties and their skills at communicating with a public.

Even though we had significantly raised the bar for competitors, we were encouraged to receive a slight overall increase in the number of entries, totalling 205 articles in both Chinese and English, from 16 regions in mainland China and 20 countries outside China. Of particular note was the 27% increase, in comparison to the previous year, in manuscripts submitted by China-based reviewers. Contributors included art professionals of all kinds, as well as teachers and students at art schools and research institutes, and a range of writers from diverse backgrounds. Of the English language entries, 40% were from media professionals and freelancers. Submissions included reviews of nearly 200 contemporary art exhibitions in more than 60 cities around the world over the past year. This shows the breadth of influence the IAAC now enjoys. It also demonstrates that the increase in prize money places the Awards in pole position to join the front rank of global awards in the visual arts.

Art criticism and artistic creation tread two parallel paths. Sometimes the criticism complements the creation; sometimes, it offers a form of interpretation; and sometimes it becomes part of the action and forms part of the creative act. Critique and creativity are two sides of the same coin, and this holds true for wide areas of human endeavour, far beyond the specific field of the visual arts. Today the explosion in communications brought about by the internet and social media makes it easier than ever before for people to express an opinion about art. However, the dramatic increase in the quantity of writing about art often seems to have been accompanied by a corresponding diminution of critical thinking, with the result that reflective commentary is increasingly difficult to find. It is against this background that we have set ourselves the goal of stimulating good critical writing, dialogue and research. We believe that the art gallery still provides an ideal setting for displaying new work and voicing new ideas about it and about its place in society.

Through these texts, we catch a glimpse of the broad range of artistic practice on the international artistic scene. If we choose to, however, we can also focus more narrowly on the pioneering experimentation of artists and institutions around the world and see how they tackle the question of mediating between the work of art and its audience. By making an annual compilation of criticism from all over the world, we obtain a rare, cumulative insight into the history of artistic ideas at the point of emergence, and of the complex relationship between the artist, the institution, the critic and the audience.

It is never possible, of course, to arrive at any form of consensus on the wider role of criticism in society. In 2017 the world moved forward amid both crisis and prosperity and ushered in historic changes in an atmosphere of excitement mingled with trepidation. Instead of choosing to close ourselves off and withdraw from the cacophony, we remain open to new ideas and experience. In bringing together a wide diversity of critical voices, we believe we can add something of value to the general debate. We will always uphold the right to ask questions of authority and to test the value of received opinions. We believe in the value of what we support and earnestly hope we can communicate in good faith with those whose convictions we may, or may not, share.

Of course, these four years of sustained effort would not have borne fruit without the cherished support and cooperation of the following public and private institutions and initiatives: the Pudong New Area Culture and Art Fund Award, which we have won for the past four consecutive years; the Royal College of Art, the International Association of Art Critics, Anxin Trust Co., Ltd. and the China Academy of Art, which have become our long-term partners; China Minsheng Bank Co., Ltd., Anxin Trust Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Minsheng Art Foundation, which are our long-time sponsors and supporters of the International Awards for Art Criticism; numerous domestic universities and colleges that have become academic partners of the museum, and have joined us in promoting the Awards and raising their profile, by enabling us to host a series of seminars and public discussions on art criticism; the Pudong New Area government in Shanghai and various cultural departments that have provided policy support and funding; nearly one hundred print and online media outlets at home and abroad, which have become our media partners, in providing timely, extensive and in-depth coverage of the Awards; an ever-increasing number of art critics and cultural and art professionals, who have accorded us ever-growing attention and assistance; and the swelling ranks of individuals who have volunteered all kinds of support.

We take pride in continuing to work closely alongside the International Awards for Art Criticism and will continue to promote them to the very best of their ability, along with the cause of art criticism in general. We try to draw on the ideas and the inspiration provided by these Awards in our day-to-day work in the museum. By doing this we hope to develop new and still closer forms of collaboration, where art critics and the museum staff can learn new approaches from each other, to the mutual benefit of both.

作为上海民生现代美术馆常设艺术项目，国际艺术评论奖（ IAAC ）已经走到第四年。从心怀憧憬到笃定从容，这一路成长汇聚了许多关怀与帮助，也收获了自信与信念。

不同于前三届，在第四届国际艺术评论奖的角逐中，我们融入了全新赛制：要求投稿稿件为从未对外发布的全新评论文章，同时获奖者则增加至4 位，其中一等奖1 名，二等奖3 名；奖金也大幅度增加，一等奖奖金增至80000 元人民币，二等奖增至30000 元人民币。我们希望通过这些改变来提高国际艺术评论奖的国际持续竞争力，扩展稿源的地域广泛性，并激励那些坚持以全新的书写方式在艺术评论的浪潮中探索的独立评论者们。

即使提高了角逐要求，我们仍然收获了来自于近20 个国家和地区的中、英文稿件205 篇，其中中国地区的投稿量较去年增加了27%。投稿者不仅包括艺术机构从业者、艺术教育及研究机构的教师和学生、艺术爱好者，而且，在英文投稿者中，有40% 的投稿来自于专业的媒体人与自由撰稿人。投稿的评论内容则涉及到过去一年中来自全球60 多个城市的近200 个当代艺术展览。这不仅意味着“国际艺术评论奖”已经具有相当广的国际影响力，也证明了这个奖项的含金量已趋近国际顶尖水平。

艺术评论与艺术创作是两条并行不悖的路径，有时候评论是创作的补充，有时候评论是创作的解读，甚至有时候，评论即行动，评论就是一种艺术创作活动。两者互为启发与助力，其活动与影响早已远远超出艺术界本身。今天，面对网络社会的人人发声与艺术生产的“繁荣”，充满鲜明观点、思辨态度、精准精悍的艺术评论却越来越少见。正是出于这些思路，我们开始探索在美术馆的语境中推动当代艺术的独立评论。四年来，我们始终持守我们的行动宗旨——推动当代艺术的独立评论，促进艺术评论者的批判性思考、对话和研究，倡导原创、独立、客观的书写。因为我们相信一所美术馆既是艺术创作的展呈空间，也应该成为一个思想、理念的发声场所，就像我们的左脑与右脑一样，在感性与理性的互搏之中变得完满。

艺术评论者们积聚的这些态度与观念，既是这个时代心灵的交响，也是新的历史时刻在国际艺术实践中显示的线索。透过这些文本，我们一睹了国际艺术实践散落寰宇的版图，也管窥了全球艺术家、艺术机构的先锋实验及其问题理路。因此，累年的国际艺术评论奖文本书写编纂过程，正是世界艺术与评论交织涌现的进程，这些观点、态度、理念在艺术的进程中汇聚、凝结、编织，成为一部审慎而敏锐的艺术思考史。

只有汇聚声音，才有可能凝聚共识。2017 年的世界，在危机与繁荣中向前迈进，在兴奋与颤栗中迎来了历史性的变化。我们并未在纷扰中选择自我封闭与退缩，而是用更开放的心态接纳世界，在更深刻的层面上汇聚有价值的声音。我们持守艺术评论的批判精神，鼓励勇敢无畏的表达，不向任何力量妥协，真诚而冷静地表达与思考。我们期望心灵在真诚中彼此交流，在学术中彼此理解，在书写中达成友谊与趣味，在语言的海洋中汇聚成为一座艺术观念的大陆。

Born in Atlanta, Chris Fite-Wassilak is a London-based writer and critic, a regular contributor to Apollo, Art Monthly, Art Papers, ArtReview and Frieze, and a contributing editor for ArtReview. His short book of essays, Ha-Ha Crystal ( 2016 ), is published by Copy Press, London.
