David Blamey
David Blamey is a London-based artist. His work encompasses several activities that overlap to form a multidimensional practice resisting conventional categorisation. He deliberately positions his projects within a range of public situations, both inside and beyond the art gallery. Having regularly travelled and carried out research in India over a period of thirty years, in 2006 he was awarded the Arts Council of England’s Prayog International Artist Fellowship and he was a guest contributor to the Experimenta 2007 festival in Bangalore and Mumbai. Blamey edited Here, There, Elsewhere: Dialogues on Location and Mobility ( 2002 ) and co-edited Living Pictures: Perspectives on the Film Poster in India ( 2005 ), cultural studies published by Open Editions, an independent publishing platform that he founded in 1992. His recent activities include producing a 12-inch vinyl record, Rural ( 2015 ), and a film, Rice ( 2017 ); and editing two books, Specialism ( 2016 ) and Distributed ( 2018 ). Last year he curated the experimental film programme Short Bursts of Concentrated Joy for Houghton festival and created the sound project Learning To Listen for Bang & Olufsen. The Wire described his O.K. cassette release for My Dance the Skull’s Voice Studies series as ‘something quite strange, creepy and good’.
